On Friday, The Washington Post reported that Twitter has suspended the accounts of a number of conservative journalists and commentators who have made offensive jokes about President Donald Trump.
Twitter suspended the account of the conservative writer and blogger Ann Coulter after the conservative media figure tweeted an unflattering picture of a Trump campaign sign.
The account was restored Friday morning.
Ann Coulter has also been suspended from Twitter.
On Saturday, The Hill reported that the social media giant has suspended @RealAlexJones and @RealBenCarson for posts they made on Twitter last week.
In a statement on Friday, Twitter said it is investigating the accounts.
“While we do not comment on individual accounts, we do take matters of this nature very seriously, and we take them very seriously,” the statement said.
“We take a number the abuse of social media seriously, too, and as part of our efforts to protect people and communities from harassment and abuse, we have suspended @RyanLuban and @DavidCox, and have launched a full investigation into their accounts.”
The Washington Free Beacon reported on Monday that the White House Office of Public Liaison has launched an investigation into the accounts and is considering the possibility of censoring them.
“This is not the first time the White, House, or the media have been the target of a tweet from an account,” a source familiar with the matter told The Hill.
“A number of us were the targets of a series of tweets that were sent to multiple individuals, including one that came directly from the White house.
Those tweets were deleted.”
Trump has repeatedly called for the firing of people who make the tweets, including comedian and commentator Jack Posobiec, former Trump aide Steve Bannon, and former Breitbart News CEO Stephen K. Bannon.
Trump also has called for a purge of the media.
“Twitter has suspended my friend Jack Posocieci.
Sad!” he tweeted Friday.
“If it wasn’t for Jack PosoCieci, I’d be fired from Twitter!
On Saturday morning, Posocia tweeted, “Sorry, @WhiteHouse, but I’m not going to tweet from there.”
Posoci has been suspended for his Twitter tweets.
